After a day of seeing patients, I needed to turn the care on myself. As you can see in the photo, I’ve cupped myself using silicone suction cups.
Like many people, I too have chronic tension in my body from repetitive motion. For me, that is the shoulder region. I have been a Licensed Acupuncturist for the past decade, and I’ve been a Licensed Massage Therapist for even longer than a decade. The repetitive motion of performing manual bodywork has caused some chronic buildup that requires maintenance.
Cupping Therapy, also known as βcuppingβ became wildly popular after American swimming star Michael Phelpsβ was photographed with cupping marks on his shoulder at the Rio Olympic Games. However, cupping therapy is not new and has a long history in holistic medicine; Being used in Chinese medicine, Egyptian Medicine, and Middle Eastern Medicine for thousands of years.

I’m using a silicone cup on myself at home. In my practice, I perform fire cupping. Fire cupping, a traditional form of cupping, uses glass cups and heat (from fire) to create suction. The suction pulls the skin and fascia up and away from the underlying muscles, creating local microtraumas and allow for fluid movement. The microtraumas signal the body to send fresh blood and oxygen to the muscles and tissues affected, facilitating healing.
Cupping Therapy has been shown to help/improve the following:
- Encourage tissues to release toxins
- Increase blood circulation
- Improve immune system function
- Increase muscle recovery speed
- Improve respiratory health
- Reduce anxiety
- Relieve muscular pain and tension
- Promote relaxation
After all, even the mighty healer needs a little TLC! As you can see, I’ve taken the plunge into self-cupping, bravely tackling my chronic tension from years of practicing acupuncture and massage therapy. No, I’m not trying to copy Michael Phelps; I’m just trying to ensure my shoulders don’t stage a protest and demand better working conditions. So, whether you’re a world-class athlete, a stressed-out healer, or just someone who wants to look like a polka-dotted Dalmatian, cupping therapy might just be the suction sensation your body needs. Remember, it’s all in the pursuit of healthier tissues and Olympic-level relaxation! πββοΈπββοΈπΎ
